About plastics summiT - global EVENT 2022

Do not miss this global event

The Plastics Summit – Global Event 2022 presents itself as a disruptive event, bringing together the key stakeholders for a sustainable future, raising awareness on climate citizenship underpinned by Planetary Health.

Aiming to serve as forum of ideas, this event strives to converge diverse stakeholders’ visions to present wide-ranging and engaging solutions for all the plastic value chain.

This will result in a commitment via a position statement that will translate a global vision and action to create a more sustainable environment and circular future for plastics.

PLASTICS SUMMIT - GLOBAL EVENT 2022

CARBON ZERO EVENT

We are extremely pleased to announce that the Plastics Summit – Global Event 2022 has reinforced its climate commitment by offsetting the emissions resulting from the event through the Carbono Zero® certification, a benchmark for the calculation and compensation of carbon emissions provided by Ponto Verde Serviços. This certification allows the capture of emissions through carbon credits with origin in the national forest or in international standards.

This major event in the sustainability area will offset 51.8 carbon credits - measured in tons of CO2 equivalent - over a period of 5 to 10 years in the national forest area of the Carbono Zero® stock, specifically in 0.85 acres of Quinta da França , located in the municipality of Covilhã, which will be monitored by Terraprima.

In addition to the climate commitment to reduce the carbon footprint and offset unavoidable emissions, it is also important to mention the important contribution to the socio-economic and environmental resilience of rural areas and a country protected from fires.

POSITION STATEMENT

______

The Position Statement “Beyond the words… Creating a Sustainable Future!” is a core outcome of the Plastics Summit - Global Event 2022 (PSGE 2022), resulting from a holistic and cross-sectorial vision on actions to improve circular economy and environmental sustainability.

The Position Statement was structured and developed with the participation of the committee members of the Plastic Summit - Global Event 2022 organization (APIP) together with 80 personalities, including speakers from each panel of the PSGE 2022 and members of the Expert Committee. In this context, several meetings were held to obtain feedback and share ideas resulting in the final position statement.

The Position Statement is a blend of recommendations and commitments that are segmented into four main lines of action: regulatory and legislative process, ocean pollution, sustainable products and green claims and carbon neutrality. It is intended to have a core contribution to the pursuit of sustainable development goals (SDG 12 - Sustainable Production and Consumption, SDG 13 - Climate Action and SDG 14 - Protect Marine Life), circular economy, and efficient use of resources.

The Position Statement can be subscribed by any person (individual or collective) and it is aimed at all stakeholders involved in the value chain, from raw material producers to consumers, including services, industry (manufacturers, recyclers, end-users and logistics) as well as other parties such as academia, governments, regulators, NGOs and civil society.

Furthermore, this Position Statement will be presented to policy makers and international organizations, with the aim of contributing positively to local, regional, national, and global policies.

Don’t miss the opportunity to take part of this initiative.

Main Themes

1st Panel

The effectiveness of the regulatory measures applied to the plastics value chain. Reflections on their elaboration, implementation and monitoring.

The significance of stakeholders engagement on policy development

At a time when several restrictive measures have been implemented to limit the use of certain plastic products on a global scale, and considering the demanding future goals for the collection, recycling and recycled content in new products, it is important to explore the perceptions of the stakeholders involved in the plastic value chain.

In this panel, it will be discussed the regulatory measures in place and their assessment, equity, applicability, means, monitoring and effectiveness, as well as the achievement of a convergent vision for a real circular economy. Additionally, ecodesign, waste treatment and management operations, together with the promotion of behavioural changes in stakeholders and consumers are subject of matter importance for this discussion.

2nd Panel

Pollution of the oceans: The true causes. Effectiveness of current solutions, and challenges for the future.

The importance of behaviour change

Recently, representatives from 175 nations at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) in Nairobi approved the elaboration of a legally binding international treaty to contain plastic pollution in the oceans. Further, the sustainable blue economy is a strategic vector to enhance the economic, social and environmental use of the oceans.

It is therefore urgent to increase knowledge about the main sources of ocean pollution, their impact and the effectiveness of current solutions to tackle pollution. The awareness on the actions to be implemented that will allow an effective preservation of this natural system and pollution prevention and mitigation is essential to address this issue.

3rd Panel

Ways to avoid greenwashing.

The importance of Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), Eco-Efficiency Label, Digital Product Passport and Green Public Procurement.

In an era where sustainability claims on products are growing at a pace as never seen before and alternative products to plastics are brought to the market, it is of the utmost importance to bring to the debate policies and initiatives that aim to improve products global environmental performance throughout their entire life cycle.

The Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), the Eco-Efficiency Label, the Digital Product Passport and the Green Public Procurement are tools that will contribute to increase the transparency and dissemination of information on products purchased by the consumer, thus allowing a more sustainable choice.

4th Panel

The global goal of carbon neutrality: Plastics industry roadmap to decarbonization. Climate citizenship and planetary health.

Considering that climate change is likely to be the biggest challenge that society is facing and its mitigation is under every stakeholder’s control, it is important to know the roadmap and commitment of the plastics industry to achieve carbon neutrality.

A sustainable planetary system will require a radical change in individual and collective human behaviour at a global level to safeguard the future of human health, reliant on planet’s natural resources sustainability.

Thus, it is crucial to bring to the debate the transdisciplinary perspective of planetary health and the cities role on the adoption of a genuine climate citizenship.
